Will the real reality please step forward?
I guess I'm back on my sci-fi kick if I'm reviewing books like Pivot Point by Kasie West. But this book has an unusual plot even on the overcrowded YA shelves. This is the story of Addison Coleman who lives in a world divided between compounds housing paranormally gifted people and the world outside inhabited by normals (or Norms). Addison is a Searcher which means that her power is to see alternate versions of the future which supposedly helps her to make the best choices about which path to take. However, her powers are tested to the limits when her parents announce they are getting divorced - her father moving outside the compound to live with the Norms and her mother staying inside. She has to decide which parent to live with. A Search should give her the answer. Right?
Aha! Not so easy. When she performs the search, she discovers two different lives each with their own high points, low points and completely separate romantic interests, plus a murder plot afoot. She starts to formulate plans after investigating the murders but soon becomes confused as to whether she is in her real life or caught in a Search. If it's a search she'll have to give up one of these versions of her life, but which one? The choice is brave and heartbreaking. Addison is a resilient heroine who deals takes pain and loss in her stride and moves on with (both versions of her) life in good humor. The cast of supporting characters, particularly the paranormals with their various gifts, is great fun. And the book is a fast-paced easy read. Like much YA there's some soft romance, lots of action, and a tiny bit of grit. But this book has a lovely balance and great characters and is a very enjoyable read.
