Okay, I enjoyed False Sight, by Dan Krokos, the sequel to False Memory. And I feel maybe I owe the author an apology in advance because I let my eight year old review the first book and I'm commenting on the second book - while I actually liked the first book better. So in fairness I really loved False Memory. It brought Cleveland into the limelight much as The Avengers movie did, particularly in terms of scaring the population and generally blowing stuff up. But what I loved about the first book, and found a little lacking in the second, was the heroine (Miranda's) personality. In the first book she woke up at the beginning with no memories and had to figure out why - and who she was in the process, what had happened to her etc. Having more or less come to terms with that in the first book, I'm not sure that Krokos gave himself enough room to move with her character in the sequel. She was still struggling with questions about the relevance of memory to who we are inside, but it seemed a lot more superficial, or maybe it's just that he did it so well in the first book, the second was a letdown. I also felt that Miranda had a lot more "real" issues to struggle with in the first book and I was really scared for her and hoping for her to succeed. In the second book, she was faced with some pretty devastating enemies, but the resolutions to her conflicts were a little too convenient in a number of places. I don't feel she really learned as much from her struggles in the second book because there were lots of sleights of hand that got her out of sticky situations. Not meaning to be too negative because it's a fast-paced read with a lot of cool lines and great action, but (as with many sequels) this one didn't quite live up to the first book. I'm really hoping the next book raises the stakes higher for Miranda. I'm sticking with Krokos and his work and still love the characters, just want them to have a bit more internal development along with the external action.
