OK, so this isn't technically a book for young folk, but I allowed myself the brain-dead pleasure of reading a chic-lit book on the trip to TX last week and actually enjoyed it, maybe because I had a cold or maybe because I was stuck in a car and needed an escape, or maybe because it really is a cute book. Sophie Kinsella's new rom-com, I've Got Your Number focuses on romance via a smartphone and delivers on its promise. It is cute and clever. The heroine, Poppy, loses her phone during a pre-wedding event and "steals" a smartphone she finds in a trash receptacle, soon finding out it belonged to the assistant of a cute corporate exec, Sam Roxton. Despite the fact she's engaged to someone else, she manages to forge a relationship with Sam as a result of going through his emails and text messages, and helping him with a few of his business travails. Poppy is basically a carbon copy of most of Kinsella's heroines, notably Rebecca from the ever popular "shopaholic" series (yes, I've read some of them too!). But Kinsella deals deftly with plot points creating a modern day farce-like structure where every time you think Poppy couldn't make a worse hash of things than she already has, she somehow manages to put herself in a more embarrassing situation. Naturally, Sam is initially repelled or at least put-out by Poppy's antics and later finds them endearing. If you're looking for a chic-lit experience with no major sex or violence, this is a fun read.
