Jake is in love with Samantha but he doesn't get to tell her before losing the use of his vocal chords in an auto accident as a result of drink driving. The book follows their relationship as they find ways to communicate with each other that don't require spoken words. Jake also learns that there's a lot more to Samantha than first appears and much of the book is about the two of them learning to love and trust each other with their secrets and problems. While some of Samantha's issues were a little bit glossed over toward the end (and I didn't get the sense that she was really in as much peril as she seemed to be at the end of the day), the book works well and I was willing to suspend my disbelief and enjoy it. While most of what Taylor writes is in the sci-fi and fantasy genres, which I love, this book is a nice departure for a strong self-made writer.
I have to hand it to Keary Taylor who has stuck to her guns as a self-published author and is making a really good go of it in an overcrowded YA and new adult marketplace. Recently, I read her contemporary romance, What I Didn't Say and very much enjoyed it. Although it deals with some serious issues it's pretty lightweight overall - it's an engaging fast read that isn't too depressing despite touching on the perils of teen drinking and driving, as well as some highly dysfunctional family issues. How does she manage that, you ask? Read it and find out - and support a self-published author in the process.
