You know I enjoyed Reboot by Amy Tintera when I say I read it on a car trip from Ohio to Texas with three fussing kids in the backseat. Yes, the book absorbed me so much that the kids didn't even bother me (well not too much, anyway). I've read a lot of YA dystopian stories lately. I guess Amazon has been pushing them on my favorites list or something. But I haven't been disappointed in any of them. While Reboot is a little predictable in places - you know the lead girl (Wren) is going to fall for Callum the second he appears as a reboot in the reboot facility (ie a human who has died of a strange virus and come back to life faster, stronger and generally better in this fictional society). And you just know that despite the fact Wren feels that she doesn't have emotions and she's cold and dead inside and out, Callum will break through her tough exterior and get to her warm and squishy interior where she's still a hurt little girl aching for love. But the story and characters are so engaging that you hang in there for the ride - at least I did. And it was a much better ride than three days in the car! At least it took my mind off one of the days in the car. It's a relatively fast read and while there is violence and romance there's nothing to graphic so I wouldn't have qualms about teens reading it. I also liked the way that the book has a wonderful sense of closure at the end even though it's billed (on Goodreads at least) as number 1 in a series. This is a completely self-contained story that ties up the loose ends and finishes without any major cliffhangers. I was worried for a second toward the end we might be heading for a tragic cliffhanger, but Tintera drew the narrative to a full and satisfying conclusion. Original take on the dystopian theme and great mix of action, adventure and romance.
