All is well and good until she gets to a town where she starts making friends she doesn't want to have to give up, and of course here's where the romantic interest comes into play as well. It's hard to describe what happens next without giving away the plot, but this move to a place where Daisy does want to establish real relationships forces her to confront questions about the people she's been working for, and about the risks of taking the idea of dying too lightly. The idea that humans can become blase about everything, even death, is a great one to explore in a YA sci-fi book like this one. It's not a deep investigation of the nature of life and death ... and love (both familial and romantic), but it does raise all of those concepts in the context of an engaging narrative. And for a book that deals with death as its prime focus, it's very fast-paced and action-packed. A pretty good holiday read all in all.
