Is it wrong for me to share my thoughts about Teardrop when I have not read Lauren Kate's previous series (Fallen)? I hope not. This is the beginning of an entirely new fantasy endeavor by Kate and I kept seeing it ... and seeing it ... and seeing it ... on the bookshelves. It was like the book was taunting me so I finally caved and bought a sale copy and read it. So whoever did the marketing must be commended!
Overall, I liked the book, but I guess I wasn't as wild about it as I expected to be. It's probably because it's the first book in a series that looks to be quite complicated plotwise so there's a lot of foundational development of the characters and the story here. I've read the synopsis for the forthcoming book two (Waterfall) and it looks like a lot more happens in the next installment. Thus, in Teardrop, we're really just getting to know heroine Eureka and the two lads who vie for her affection (Brooks and Ander) as well as her rag-tag support cast of broken family and school friends (and of course the school nemesis as well who might turn out to be a lot more than she seems - she seems pretty mysterious in this book!)
This is a YA fantasy based on lost underwater legends and a plot developed around fantastical water creatures of various stripes with various goals involving Eureka's future, or lack thereof. Eureka obviously holds the key to some ancient aquatic legends and there are some major reveals about her destiny toward the end of the story. Eureka is a nice character who goes through a lot and seems to come out stronger at the end of the day. The point of the story is almost to see how far she can go before she breaks and what will happen after that. Sorry if that sounds a bit cryptic but I don't want to give away too many plot developments. I can make the point - because this is obvious from early in the book - that we know from the first that something either amazingly bad or amazingly good, or maybe just amazing, will happen if she ever cries. Hence, the title!
Overall, an enjoyable YA fantasy read with a unique form of fantasy. It does read a little bit like a prologue for the rest of the series, but it does a good job in setting the scene for a lot more action and destruction to come.
