I really liked The Dragon Heir, which I listened to on audiobook. I believe some folks were critical of the narrator (Robert Ramirez), but I actually thought he did a really good job with the material and with the voices. It's not easy for a man to do young female voices and he did very well with characters like Madison, Ellen and Alicia.
The plot of this book is quite complex. It leads up to the big showdown in Trinity between the Roses and the folks manning the sanctuary and they're all fighting over the Dragon Stone which Jason has "liberated" from its hiding place. Madison forms a strange connection with the stone but we don't find out what or why until close to the end of the book. The narrative is rife with subplots and Chima handles them deftly as always. It's easy to follow who is plotting what against whom despite the complexity of the interwoven plot-lines.
The characters all develop significantly, and sometimes in surprising ways. Seph in particular is facing challenges the likes of which he has not confronted before and he doesn't necessarily cope in the best way. Madison battles her attraction to Seph and her responsibilities to her own family. And Jack and Ellen struggle to guard Trinity and stay alive in the process. I'm definitely going to read the next book but I want to take a break because the ending of the Dragon Heir was very satisfying and I want to enjoy the characters resting places here before I move onward in the narrative. Keep writing, Cinda! I'm definitely going to keep reading ...
